Release Information - What's New in MEDUSA4
MEDUSA4 R6, the latest generation of this CAD software that is used worldwide, comes with a completely revised, modern user interface. Over the years CAD Schroer has been collating and analysing feedback from users. The result is a clearly structured modern user interface with a ribbon menu and a context-sensitive dashboard; providing the user with even faster access to the clearly structured functions. In designing the new user interface, special emphasis was given to making the software intuitive for new users. All dialogue boxes and functions were updated to create an even more easily accessible and user-friendly design.
The ribbon menu has proved itself in many diverse applications within the software world; for that reason CAD Schroer has now implemented a ribbon interface for MEDUSA4 R6. The new user interface is much simpler and hence more intuitive; existing users will notice the difference immediately. Navigation is easy because the functions are structured clearly and divided into context-sensitive groups. The re-design took into account that the path to click through to individual functions could be shortened; drawings can now be created even faster as a result. Users can customize the ribbon menu in MEDUSA4 R6 via an easy-to-use dialog-box. They can move individual icons around and create completely new function groups. CAD Schroer has also fundamentally overhauled the Icon-Design, making the function’s meaning instantly recognisable from the icon.
Optimized for modern screens
The new MEDUSA4 R6 user interface has been optimized for every common resolution used in modern screens, including the most common screen resolutions for laptops. The ribbon menu can be minimized to create extra space for the drawing area. The icons come in three different sizes, so they can be made larger or smaller as needed. The individual dialog boxes, such as the dashboard, the symbol manager, and the structure tree, can be detached from the user interface to free-up extra space for the drawing area, for example by moving them to a second monitor.
As one of the most popular and productive mechanisms in our systems we have continuously developed the dashboard. It was once again completely re-designed for the new generation MEDUSA4 R6. Not only does it now have a permanent position on the left side of the application, it now also includes all the properties and functions that are context specific to the current task. When drawing the dashboard displays all the relevant context sensitive information, such as properties for the drawing sheet or for lines, texts, dimensioning, and symbols. Users can also edit the context-sensitive tools and the associated function groups on the dashboard; they can add new functions, hide existing functions and even create new groups.
Windows File Manager
With MEDUSA4 R6 onwards, opening and saving of drawings and other file data will be via the Windows standard file manager. Multiple files can now be opened simultaneously. Individual users can create their project file locations as a link in their explorer favourites and system administrators can manage access rights easily via Windows. Additionally, individual drawings can be previewed, with variable image size; either through the Windows file manager or directly via the Windows explorer.
Catalog and Symbol Browser
The new MEDUSA4 R6 includes a total re-design of the catalog and symbol browser. In the new browser, users have a precise overview of the symbol catalogs and standards used. When selecting a catalog the symbol browser preview window now graphically displays all the available symbols. If a specific part of the catalog is selected, only the appropriate symbols will be automatically retrieved and the relevant symbol preview will be displayed. Symbols can thus be easily searched, the required element chosen and placed in a drawing. The preview size of individual elements can be scaled dynamically. The selection facility previously available continues to be at the user’s disposal.
In addition to the normal menus, MEDUSA4 R6 now also offers users a menu that is optimized for tablets. It consists of a configurable area where individual functions can be placed, in the form of icons in various sizes. The tablet menu was designed for touchscreens and tablets, but it can also be used as a dialogue box on a second monitor.
In Sheet Graphics toolbars
To reduce cursor movements to a minimum, and to ensure there are no functions duplicated in ribbons or the dashboard we have added two In-Sheet Graphics toolbars. These tool bars, are translucent, unless the cursor is over them, contain the most commonly used viewing tools, selection filters and sheet navigation tools.
Backstage area, Options dialog and administration
In the style of software with a ribbon we have gathered together all of the common functions into a single “Backstage” area. Not only “Save” and “Save As”, but license management, Options dialog and printing.
User Interface customisation
The new user interface is completely customisable at three levels. A user can show / hide / change button size of tools in the ribbon of dashboard. A user can also copy buttons to the tablet or shortcut area. A single command returns the interface to the startup state. Administrators can manipulate buttons, groups and even ribbons to create an optimal company or department user interface. Dialogs can now be created using the industry standard GUI tool – Qt Designer
Locked groups and symbols
MEDUSA4 R6 allows individual groups and symbols on the dashboard to be locked so that the entire group is automatically selected, rather than selecting individual geometries. Uploaded symbols are automatically saved as a closed group in MEDUSA4 R6, and must be unlocked in order to edit them on the dashboard.
Specific line styles, text styles and symbols can now be saved as shortcuts in MEDUSA4 R6. As a result, the individual styles and symbols can be accessed quickly from the corresponding dashboard without configuring them in advance.
MEDUSA4 R6 allows text, web addresses and other information concerning the drawing to be saved as QR (quick response) codes in the drawing. These can be edited quickly and easily by double-clicking on the QR code. This makes the drawing even more informative, and lets you encode the associated websites and information as a QR code.
Update of the DIN EN ISO 10628 Standard to the 2013-04 Version
The new MEDUSA4 R6 comes with the updated DIN EN ISO 10628 as per the 2013-04 version. It contains all the adapted symbols in accordance with the current standard. The old version of the DIN EN ISO 10628 symbol catalog is, of course, still available to the user.
Language–independent Symbol Properties
In MEDUSA4 R6 the properties for individual symbols and whole diagrams have been designed to be language independent. This means that when switching between languages in the project configuration mode, the property descriptions change accordingly, irrespective of the language used to create the diagram.
Reports available in PDF, XLS, RTF or HTML formats
With MEDUSA4 R6 report formats have been extensively extended. In MEDUSA4 reports can now be generated in PDF, XLS, RTF, HTML as well as CSV formats. Also the format of individual reports can be customised for individual organisations. The option to create reports as tables on drawings and to preview in a dialog are, of course, also still available.
Enhanced Options for Crossing Lines
In MEDUSA4 R6 processing of crossing lines in diagrams has been optimised. The user now has various options to display crossing lines as gaps or curves. Line types can also be configured. Now overlapping can be changed to the desired configuration by a single mouse click.
New Search Function for Equipment and Piping
The search functions have been extended in MEDUSA4 R6 to aid finding components and pipe lines in complex flow diagrams. By inputting a component or pipeline ID, it is now possible to immediately locate it automatically in the diagram and highlight it.
New Symbol Property Tables
This new function has been added in MEDUSA4 R6 to allow the generation of symbol property tables. Tables connected to the symbols can now be placed onto the diagram sheet. These tables contain the attribute values of the associated symbols. If the attributed values are changed, the values in the associated tables change automatically. Individual tables can be configured and can be adapted to respective corporate standards.
The user interface for MEDInfo Web – the web interface of MEDUSA4’s information and document management system – has also been optimized along with the MEDUSA4 R6 user interface. The web interface now offers a more updated, simplified way to access individual pieces of information and data.
