MEDUSA4 Rocks: Sahara Rain Adopts Logo Created in MEDUSA4 Personal™

Dübendorf, Zurich, Switzerland – 21 October 2009: It’s not every day you hear of a link between CAD and Hard Rock, but a MEDUSA4 Personal 3D design may be on its way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - It has caught the imagination of Swiss Hard Rockers Sahara Rain, whose logo design competition was won by Gilbert Koch, using MEDUSA4 Personal. By popular demand, CAD Schroer has created an eServices platform for quick and inexpensive conversion of designs created with the software, which allows people like Sahara Rain to use privately created designs commercially.

Standing out from the Rest
CAD Schroer’s own Gilbert Koch, himself a keen percussionist, has been a fan of the Swiss rock band since their beginnings in 2007. “I followed their progress on MySpace, and when they announced a logo design competition, I thought, ‘I’ll have a go in MEDUSA4 3D!’” CAD systems aren’t usually associated with logo design, but Gilbert says his logo has a strong geometric basis. He thought a circular design would work well projected onto various surfaces and printed onto a drum set. The logo is made up of an amalgamation of the band’s initials, which form a new shape with a rounded top but spiky ends, something that pays tribute to the band’s vocal range, as well as the juxtaposition of the melodic with rough and ready rock’n’roll edginess.

“When we released our album Sand in Your Hands, we felt the need for a stronger logo design to communicate a strong message. The design Gilbert created with MEDUSA4 did just that,” says Adrian Honneger, who shares the lead guitar role with Dave Silhanek.

Strong and Flexible Design
Gilbert was thrilled when he learned that his MEDUSA4 Personal design had won. What did he win? “An autographed pre-release CD and a toy camel!” he grins, “And I also won some good friends. I met the whole band, and I was there for their first CD release gig earlier this year. They’re now working on their second album, with a long list of gigs lined up.” Gilbert has since used MEDUSA4 Personal’s flexible 3D tool to create cylindrical shapes or chisel the logo onto surfaces such as spheres, which he then pulls into image manipulation software and positions in alpine or lunar landscapes to create intriguing illustrations for the band’s publicity.

“The logo’s strong visual impact has already helped us achieve our objectives,” says Adrian, “The logo has become a trademark for Sahara Rain, and we will be working with Gilbert again on the design of our next album.”

MEDUSA4 Personal to Public
MEDUSA4 Personal, which is the free version of the advanced 2D/3D CAD software suite, is used by tens of thousands of people throughout the world. The software is licensed for private use, and watermarks its designs accordingly. By popular demand, CAD Schroer has now created an eServices portal, allowing users to create DXF or PDF files from their MEDUSA4 designs for a very small fee, which can then be used commercially.
