MPDS4® FAQs
Question:
Is there a quick way to position hundreds of steelwork maintenance access platforms of different sizes in the tank farms we design with MPDS4?
Answer:
If you regularly design a lot of custom steel platforms, you can take advantage of our consultancy services. We can develop a custom Steel Platform Wizard for you, which will allow you to automatically create different standard platforms of your particular style, complete with stiffeners, just by entering a few values and picking member sections. The steelwork created is completely editable for future design modifications.

Question:
I’m quite interested in using your MPDS4 FACTORY LAYOUT system to do a large-scale layout of our manufacturing plant with our existing ProE machinery models, but how do I then share my plant with colleagues and suppliers who only use Pro/ENGINEER?
Answer:
If by sharing you mean that you need third parties to have a look at the results, make comments or ask for changes, the new MPDS4 REVIEW tool is a low cost option which allows them to conduct fly-throughs of plant models you can e-mail to them. If they want to look at the model in Pro/ENGINEER, you can use our STEP or IGES interface to provide them with a model to import. If you want to work on the model concurrently with other colleagues, then they too will need access to an MPDS4 licence.

Question:
What’s the difference between MPDS4 and MPDS?
Answer:
MPDS4 not only ported the existing MEDUSA Plant Design Applications to the Fourth Generation technology, offering a much cleaner user interface, faster ways of working, and full integration with MEDUSA4 DRAFTING; it also introduces a number of new modules including MPDS4 ELECTRICAL DESIGN, FACTORY LAYOUT, a 3D COMPONENT DESIGNER and a standalone 3D REVIEW tool for customers or colleagues who don't have MPDS4 installed.

Question:
Can I import external 3D models into MPDS4?
Answer:
Yes, you can easily import MEDUSA 3D, Pro/ENGINEER® and STL models from other 3D systems into Plant Design.

Question:
How much data can MPDS4 FACTORY LAYOUT handle?
Answer:
FACTORY LAYOUT uses a multi-user, relational database that can handle a massive amount of data; most system vendors talking about large-scale assemblies mean a few hundred or thousand components; CAD Schroer’s customers are working on design projects consisting of hundreds of thousands of individual components.

Question:
Do I need an MPDS4 license for the new P&ID module?
Answer:
No. Version 2.2 of MEDUSA4 introduces the revamped P&ID module, ported to Fourth Generation technology. Formerly only available as an MPDS module, the new P&ID and PIDCAT catalogue can now be deployed by MEDUSA4 2D users without an MPDS4 license.

Question:
We provide process machinery as complete installations. When we do layouts based on customers’ premises, it takes us quite a bit of time to get a building and scenery modeled in MPDS, just to be able to do some clash detection on the models positioned inside, and then show the contents in drawings. Is there any way to make this simpler?
Answer:
Yes, use the new Factory Layout™ module; it was designed for just such scenarios. It allows you to select relevant closed geometry (usually from an imported drawing), then add height attributes. Floors, walls and other architectural elements are automatically created for you in 3D. If you need to change the drawing later on, the MPDS model will update accordingly. Our first customers report time savings of 70%!

Question:
We use MPDS4 for plant design, and we’re often confronted with 2D building plans from third party systems, usually supplied as DXF data. It usually takes us a bout a week to model all the walls in MPDS4. Is there any way of making this quicker and easier?
Answer:
Yes, the MPDS4 FACTORY LAYOUT module will * walls on imported DXF drawings will allow you to quickly auto-model them in 3D. In addition, the module allows you to create large industrial layouts, including positioning of machinery models in any 3D plane, very quickly, with auto updates between the 2D and 3D worlds.

Question:
During MPDS4 project work we sometimes need to model a range of completely new components. Is there a means of creating simple models inside MPDS4, and saving them to our catalogs?
Answer:
Yes, with the newest version (3.1) of MPDS4 CAD Schroer has released a 3D Component Designer, which allows users to quickly and easily create 3D catalog components, which can even be animated. The tool is very simple to use – a short introduction should be enough to get users working productively and save you lots of time.
